Speedometer fixing? helpppp!!!?

My speedometer is around 18mph off in the 40mph zones and around 12 off in the 60mph zones. I have asked around of how to get my speedometer corrected but the only answer ive gotten was that i could add a gear to the transmission to make it alittle better but it would cost like 700-1200 dollars D: isn%26#039;t there a calibration a mechanic could do to alter the speedometer and not have to add gears? please i need help guys, thanks.

go to your dealer and they will fix it for you

if they don%26#039;t, there are calibration kits that you can do yourself that sell on the internet

What type of car and how old??? Most newer car dont have a mechanicle speedometer. Its controled by the computer, and can be fixed with a scanner in a few minutes.
Reply:yeah you can adjust your speedometer.. people do this when they get considerably larger wheels than what theyve had before. i dont know how to do it, but search around online or ask your local shop to do it for you. shouldnt be too expensive
Reply:it sounds like the speedometer is malfunctioning not geared wrong

you should just replace the speedo head

but these can be rather expensive

In a pinch on older cars I have had great success using a bycicle computer/ speedometer you mount the magnet to the front rim and the sensor to the brake caliper

and the display on youre a pillar where you can see it
Reply:it is just a plastic gear in the transmission. you need one with with a different tooth count. it should be under $200 at a shop $25-$75 if you do it yourself
Reply:the gear ratio for the speedometer drive is off due to the different sized tire that you are using. you should be able to check with a transmission shop and get some information, or the part to replace and recalibrate the system.
